Construction: Concrete and Stone, 50.5" x 40", 2008

I am fascinated by the process of construction. From my back yard in Texas, I can watch homes being built in every direction. The rhythm of the process and the beauty of the shapes, lines and patterns inspired this quilt. I was also inspired by the office buildings and shopping centers that dot the highways. They begin as huge concrete slabs. Their dank gray color fades and changes with moisture and time. Wide open spaces mark future windows. This construction boom is visual clutter to some. They say, “It’s ugly, junky and loud.” I see subtle beauty and potential.

The elements of this quilt represent concrete slabs, sheets of drywall, piles of lumber and stacks of stone. The quilt is also about the construction process. Elements are built upon each other. There are small details and wide open space. Skilled contractors put the pieces together. We find the hand of the artist in the design and in the construction.
